Fourteen engraved plates, mostly folding, and with a host of illustrations in the text. Descartes settled in Holland in 1629, and except for occasional visits abroad lived there till 1649. He died the following year in Sweden. Descartes has been called the father of modern philosophy, and his work on the analytical method of solving geometrical problems deserves praise.
