Pepys wrote it in Shelton's system of tachygraphy published in 1641, which he embellished with foreign languages and by varieties of his own invention. The diary, never intended for the public [he tells of kicking his cook, blackening his wife's eye and taking bribes] is a compelling witness of the times as well as Restoration politics.
