This set with ink ownership signature of William Gibson, M.D. Edinburgh, dated 1809 on all title pages, a distinguished American physician who received his medical education at the University of Edinburgh. He was chair of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania for nearly three decades. He published "Institution and Practice of Surgery" in 1826 which became a standard for the profession.
