The Ladies' Flower-Garden Of Ornamental Greenhouse Plants

London: William S. Orr & Co., (1849). Second edition. Hardcover. 215 pages. 30 x 25 cm. Forty-two lithographic plates printed in colors and finished by hand, tissue guards. With no entry level manuals for gardening available in her day, she pioneered gardening as a suitable occupation for women. Her husband -- John C. Loudon, a prolific horticultural and landscape design writer founded the "Gardener's Magazine," the first periodical devoted solely to horticulture -- influenced her as did John Lindley, whose lectures she attended. Prior to her marriage her fiction writing, "The Mummy," an early science fiction novel, adumbrated perhaps by Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," and published anonymously in 1827 by Henry Colburn, received favorable reviews. NISSEN 1236 [1848 edition]. Plates generally clean, a few minor age spots to first few plates at upper margins not affecting images, raised bands, gilt decorated spine panels, joints and extremities rubbed. Three quarter green morocco and green cloth. Teg. Very good. Item #19672
