Premiere Annee L'Exposition des Beaux-Arts (Salon De 1880)

Paris: Librairie D'Art, 1880. First edition. Hardcover. Unpaginated, approx. 100 pages in text. 28.5 x 21. cm. 34 plates in photogravure by Goupil, of stunning quality, printed recto only, 64 illustrations hors texte. A juried selection of painting and sculpture, and not surprisingly academic taste does not portent success -- Dore and Rodin were relegated to 3rd class medals, and St. Gaudens awarded honorable mention in the Sculpture Section. The Medal of Honor winner for painting, Aime-Nicolas Morot, now largely forgotten as were his American apprentice artists Foster, Bogert and Haseltine -- all in the academic style. Text by Daniel Bernard, Rene Delorme, Herni Demesse, Fourcaud Gustave Goetschy, J,-K. Huysmans, Frelix Jayher, Eugene Montrosier, Gaston Schefer, Armand Silvestere and Marius Vachon. Scattered, light text toning, plates clean, backstirp chipped head and foot, corners rubbed. Orig. three quarter green morocco and marbled boards. Teg. Very good. Item #20270
