Limited edition, copy 25 of 75 on Japan imperial paper, approx. 90 plates in three states, the two supplementary sets of plates are engraved "sur papier Whatman," all are tinted, all with lettered tissue guards. Nattier's graceful and charming portraits of court ladies in this mode were very fashionable, partly because he could beautify a sitter while also retaining her likeness. Many of his pictures are in the public collections of France. BRYAN Vol. IV, p. 7. " He distinguished himself as a portrait painter, in which capacity he was much employed." The author, a noted French art historian noted for his substantial body of work on Renaissance humanism.
