In the early 1890's she became the first president of the new University of Chicago. Throughout her academic career she was a staunch advocate of higher education for women during the late 19th century. Palmer's life was commemorated at a service at Harvard University in 1903 attended by college presidents whom she knew and other notable individuals in higher education.
