Henry Ainsworth (1571–1622 or 1623), leader of the separatist congregation at Amsterdam, and controversialist, a fine type of the Elizabethan puritan—learned, sincere, earnest, and uncompromising. At first a Puritan, Ainsworth joined the Separatists who broke entirely with the Church of England. Driven abroad in the persecution of 1593, settled in Amsterdam. He attached himself to those who were styled ‘Brownists,’ who, under the name of ‘Independents,’ afterwards played so important a part in English history, and who were the ancestors of the ‘Congregationalists’ and other free churches of the present time. He and Francis Johnson founded an an independent church in Amsterdam. A falling out between the two created two separate congregations, whom they styled respectively Franciscan Brownists and Ainsworthian Brownists. Ainsworth is among the authors whose work traveled to New England in 1620 with the Pilgrims. Practically entire title page of Genesis volume laid-down, with contemporary light owner inscription of Henry Martin dated 1715, first few leaves chipped at lower corner with no loss, a few leaves, D-E marginal damp stains, Leaf F with upper corner torn away, approx. 5 x 5 centimeters; original rear free endpaper with births and deaths of Walpole and Pim families. Contents of other four volumes generally clean. Modern full brown morocco, raised bands, red leather spine labels printed in gilt. Genesis volume half brown morocco and brown boards.
