New York: D. Appleton, 1857. Hardcover. 19 x 13 cm. This American edition contains the remainder of the articles in the Edinburgh Review, and several written and published during his college years. Four pages of adverts at rear of last volume. Macaulay, an English Whig politician, essayist, poet, and historian best known for his History of England, 5 vol. (1849??"61). During his service in India for the Crown he fought for the liberty of the press and of the equality of Europeans and Indians before the law. He inaugurated a national system of education, Western in outlook, and as president of a commission on Indian jurisprudence he drafted a penal code that later became the basis of Indian criminal law. Raised bands, spine panels richly gilt in floral motifs, maroon and black spine labels printed in gilt. Interior very clean, slight surface wear. Late 19th century three quarter tan calf and marbled boards, matching endpapers and edges. Near fine. 5 vols. Item #21685
