With holograph fragment in ink from "Summer Days at Mount Shasta," tipped in Vol. I........."a milkyway of wings & blossoms, girdling this colossal monument of geological forces as if the vivifying sunbeams beating against its rocky base had broken into a foam of flowers & bees." Muir expressed his concern about mismanagement of the valley and rampant exploitation of the valley's resources.
