First edition of a suite of dramatic aquatints inspired by Verri's popular 1780 novel about the Greek poet Sappho's legendary tragic infatuation with Phaon. Tresham (1751-1814) was an Irish painter and art dealer who worked in Rome during the 1770s-80s and was elected to the Royal Academy following his return to England. As an artist Tresham excelled as a draughtsman rather than a painter, his drawings in pen and ink and black chalk are considered his best productions. Spine ends chipped, minor cover stains, dampstain in blank upper corners, approximately 5 x 2 centimeters with light to moderate plate toning. BRYAN Vol. V, p.203. Contemporary mottled sheep, front cover black leather label stamped Cav[alie]re Alessandro Verri in gilt. Item #21882
