The Peace Soup Shop. George Moutard Woodward.

The Peace Soup Shop

London: P. Roberts, ca 1790. Original Wraps. 27 x 35 cm., color etching. Jacobin used in Britain as a pejorative for radical, left-wing revolutionary politics, particularly the French revolutionary sans-culottes, Jacobins, satirized by James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson and George Cruikshank. Commonly contrasted with the stolid stocky conservative and well-meaning John Bull, dressed like an English country squire as illustrated here by Woodward. The figure on the far right says, "O'Mr. Bull_Mr. Bull_ if you have any regards for your constitution don't touch it the Cayen of Jacobinism flavors every spoonful......." Nicks to center left and bottom edges, paper and archival tape repairs on verso. Orig. illustrated wrappers. Very good. Item #22050

Price: $300.00
