This second collection of poetry, 943 poems, composed between 1915 and 1922, published shortly after Mandelstam moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow with his new wife Nadezhda. Here he express the inner exile of the poet in communist Russia. He borrows the title from Ovid (Sorrows) who was physically exiled to Tomis, Romania for reasons that remain unknown today. Original wrappers with cover illustration and publisher's mark designed by M. V. Dobuzhinskii. Slight nicks to edges at lower front cover. HELLYER 759, THE RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE BOOK 377.
