Twelve hand-colored plates with additional 12 uncolored plates designed and engraved by Cruikshank, and sixteen woodcuts in the text. One page ALS dated January 6th 1846 signed (Geo Cruikshank) bound in after the free front endpaper laid-down to a frame of wove paper. Cruikshank illustrated a host of naval titles authored by Barker. A thematic precursor to Gilbert & Sullivan without music: brave, honest and naive seamen diligently serving the Crown. Plates clean and brightly colored with text also fresh. Early signature front free endpaper, free endpapers toned, rubbing to marbled boards, raided bands, spine panels richly gilt.
