The Songs & Ballads of Shakespeare Illuminated

The Songs & Ballads of Shakespeare Illuminated

New York: Lockwood & Co, (1849). First edition. leather_bound. 23 leaves mounted on stubs. 25,5 x 20.5 cm. An excellent example of early American chromolithography. Whitman Bennett exclaimed, "The editor has been amazed at the variety and beauty of Mapleson's work, which seems to him . . ., both in abstract decoration and in miniature work, just as good and worthy of enthusiasm as that of the English Sangorski, half a century later. And the reproductions are certainly better than the Sangorski reproductions." Bennett does not list this book but refers to it oddly as "an elaborate, illuminated and miniature version of the Shakespeare Ballads." This quarto volume contains nineteen selections from Shakespeare, some handsomely printed in Gothic type and others rendered in colorful calligraphy with stunning borders and decorations. This work seems to be even scarcer than Mapleson's other publications. Endpapers renewed, plates fresh and bright, all with tissue guards, wear to corners. JAGGARD p. 437. Publisher's gilt-pictorial brown calf expertly rebacked. Aeg. Very good. Item #22178
