The production of this work was partially underwritten by the diplomat and politician Louis Barthou, the American financier Frank Altschul (later the proprietor of the Overlook Press) plus other notable bibliophile patrons. Four hors-texte full page plates with each page in the first "conte" containing a vertical illustration, and those in the second a horizontal motif in the form of a "bandeaux" extending from margin to margin. The elaborate initials and decorative elements rendered in color wood engravings by Pierre Bouchet and Theo Schmied after F.-L. Schmied's designs. Exquisite Art Deco binding by G.G. Levitzky, signed by him on lower front cover dentelle. Latter with spine and cover patterns, onlaid rectangular central panel with gilt bands wrapped around repeating chevron rectangles placed diagonally in the onlaid panels. Inner gilt and leather dentelles with silk moire endpapers. Full polished chestnut morocco. Aeg. Fine in fine matching chemise of morocco and marbled boards housed in fine slipcase bearing the latter marbled board and morocco design. Item #22183
