Item #22555 Lady Rushout & Daughter; From an Original Picture in the Collection of George Bowles Esq. Angelica Kauffman.

Lady Rushout & Daughter; From an Original Picture in the Collection of George Bowles Esq.

Np: Np, ca 1790. Kauffman, Angelica. Stiff Wraps. Color stipple engraved on wove paper, plate 32.5 x 27 cm., total margin 41 x 30 cm. Sir Joshua Reynolds was one of her staunchest allies. As a woman and history painter, an unusual designation for a woman artist in the 18th century considering history painting was the elite and most lucrative category dominated by men. The genre required extensive learning in biblical and classical literature, a background in which most women were denied access. Engraved by Thomas Burke. Most of Burke's mezzotints were engraved after Angelica Kauffman for William Wynne Ryland, who taught him the stipple engraving technique. Very good. Item #22555
