A Sketch of the Row in Parliament Street. William Heath, Paul Pry.

A Sketch of the Row in Parliament Street

London: Thomas McLean, ca 1822. Wiiliams, Charles. Boards. 25 x 36 cm. (print size). Hand colored etching. This satire characterizes the British politicians Eldon and Wellington as brawling market women. They opposed one another in Parliament over the Catholic Relief Bill (ground-breaking legislation of 1829 that extended new rights to Roman Catholics). An earlier print shows the two preparing to fight. In this sequel, Eldon has been knocked down by Wellington. From 1827–29 Heath signed his caricatures with the image of a little dandy holding an umbrella, seen here at lower right, a reference to Paul Pry who was a nosy character in an 1825 play. At left is "old Mother Baggs" and at right, "ould Orange Woman," Print mounted on board. Very Good. Item #23001
