Paris: Privately Printed, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. 107 pages. 28 x 19 cm. Frontispiece of Caylus who was a French journalist during his days in America. Ernest Caylus (1813-1878) was a young Frenchman forced to flee political unrest at home, coming to America in 1835. Most of the letters are to and from New York City. Most of the letters are in French with some in English. Names and places mentioned are frequently identified in footnotes. This volume was printed in cooperation with the American Embassy at Madrid at the behest of his family. Many of the letters deal with political situations in France, and after the death of Therese Caylus (his daughter) his grand daughters wished to have them published for his posterity -- great grand children and their descendants. Some of the letters in English are in the period of the Franco-Prussian War. OCLC notes four titles concerning Caylus but not this title. Joints cracked but firm. Three quarter brown morocco and marbled boards and marbled endpapers.Very good. Item #23372
