The History of Joseph And His Brethren; Genesis Chapters XXXVII. XXXVIII.XL
London: Day & Son, [1865]. Jones, Owen. First edition. Hardcover. Small folio, 28 x 22 cm. 52 chromolithograph plates on twenty-six leaves by Owen Jones and Henry Warren, on stone by Albert Warren. Each illustration and accompanying text in a distinct decorative border. GORDON N. RAY [The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914] notes that in his later years Owen turned to "original designs of his own." This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding, beveled edges, endpapers toned, slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. Endpapers renewed, front cover lettered and decorated in gilt with green rectangular border in gilt. Maroon cloth lettered in gilt, rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Aeg. Very good.
