The "Bab" Ballads & More "Bab" Ballads Much Sound and Little Sense
London: John Camden Hotten & George Routledge and Sons, 1869. Gilbert, W.S. First edition. 223, 224 pages. 18 x 14 cm. To supplement his income from 1861 on, Gilbert wrote a variety of stories, comic rants, grotesque illustrations, theatre reviews (many in the form of a parody of the play being reviewed), and under the pseudonym "Bab" (his childhood nickname). Illustrated throughout with his drawings. Later in life his relationship with Arthur Sullivan soured due to their opposing personalities. Gilbert was thin skinned and could be gruff, Sullivan eschewed conflict. Gilbert was however the first British writer to receive a knighthood for his plays alone. Elegantly bound by Baynton with the original green cloth covers bound-in. Raised bands, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles with interior contents pristine. Black morocco, gilt decorated. Aeg. Fine in fine black cloth slipcase. 2 Vols. Item #23819
