A complete set of this innovative literary and arts periodical, including work from the abstract expressionists of the New York School. Contributors include Jackson Pollock, John Cage, Mark Rothko, Jean Debuffet and many others. The first volume was printed at the Elm Tree Press in Woodstock, Vermont. The entire run of this short lived but important and influential art and and literary periodical curated by the husband and wife team of John and Ruth Stephans. This publication featured work by lesser known artists like Mark Tobey and Maud Morgan alongside work by more famous artists like Giacometti and Picasso. The Stephans mixed different paper stocks, colors of ink and typefaces in each issue and frequently included reproductions of prints made especially for the magazine, usually in the atelier of Stanley William Hayter. Ruth Stephan was a poet and heiress to the Walgreen fortune. Carries a host of tipped-in color plates. Included with the set is Pamela Frank, 'The Tiger's Eye-The Art of a Magazine' issued to coincide with The Tiger's Eye exhibit held at Yale in 2002 documenting the magazine's history.
