In 1860 he was commander general of the Eastern Department, but in 1862 he resigned for health reasons. In January 1869 he was sent back to Cuba to suppress an insurrection which was called the "Ten Years' War. Although it failed to achieve Cuban independence it spawned a number of important later Cuban leaders, including José Martí, Fernando Figueredo, and Tomás Estrada Palma. Signed by Letona on free front endpaper in ink. Contents generally clean. Nicks to spine head and foot. Raised bands, spine panels in gilt motifs with binding tight an firm. OCLC: 794351281.
